I have a good eye for finding birds nests hidden in the trees. Robins' roosts are the easiest to spot. They prefer low-lying branches, right about eye level. To make things more fun, I left a small tangle of colorful yarn next to the suet feeder on our kitchen windowsill. Within a week, they had carried every last strand back to their homes, to weave into their nests, I hope! I walk around our neighborhood, squinting upward, looking for pink yarn in the trees.
We don't live in the woods by any means, but behind our neighborhood there is a small patch of trees, secluded and dense enough to pretend you are there. According to these tracks, a deer (maybe multiple) lives on that tiny strip of land. Harold and Mule and I have been trying to find him. He is a sneaky one.
Whirlybirds! Helicopters! Whatever you call them, I love them.
Of course, I stomped through these as soon as the photo was taken.
Secret lunch spot. I share almonds with my lunch break buddy (top).
Thunder storms and trains, my favorite noise makers!
I like to go on walks by myself. I walk a lot anyway, to and from the bus stop, to the store, to the coffee shop. We walk the dogs. Sometimes I walk without a destination, just to relax. At first it was hard to let go of my to-do lists ,worries, and anxiety, but once I learned to focus on my steps and my surroundings, it was such a relief! Sometimes it is a struggle to enjoy the present moment, and without practice, I don't think I would have discovered so many birds nests.
Need a break? This guide to walking meditation is pretty great. See also.

Such a good post! I love what you did with the colored string. Beautiful photos too. Ok, I'll stop gushing now.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Susan! That comment made my day.
DeleteWhen i got back from Sri Lanka I realised that i hadn't walked much (we did a lot more lazing on beaches or by pools than i expected) and I missed it. I walk everywhere as well (made easier by the fact that we don't own a car) so i was glad to return to that. I think that might be the only thing i was excited about when i returned home, I REALLY struggled to return to 'real life' after being on holiday for 3 weeks.
ReplyDeleteOh man, returning to daily life after a vacation is a real hard pill to swallow. I'm glad you're getting back to your walks though, because I could totally tell that you walk a lot just from looking at the photos on your blog. My favorite ones seem to be of random daily-life scenes. That's my outsider perception anyway! :)
